2009 Activities
Ikamva Labantu will continue implementing its current chess programme by partnering with two additional schools in 2009 .The programme will target children attending Grades 3-11 (age 8-17).
In conjunction with the chess programme, the learners will go through a formal life-skills training. This life-skills based approach will enable the children to learn essential skills necessary for their transition into adulthood. Life-skills training are compulsory part of chess classes and tournaments. During a typical 60 minute chess lesson, children will spend 15 minutes engaging in activities, exercises and role-plays designed to help them overcome the challenges they face in daily life.
Modules in the life skills curriculum will include:
- STD education
- Teen pregnancy
- Substance abuse
- Personal well being ( goal setting, vision boards)
- Career guidance (older grades to spend more time on this)
- Conflict resolution
- Money management
